TerraCycle updates

An update from Elaine who runs the TerraCycle program located at the Whistlestop Gardens, at the Stanthorpe Railway precinct.

The TerraCycle program has been going for just a year and with me being away for nearly 7 months of that one has to be happy with what we have saved from landfill. There has seen a few loyal coffee pod drinkers drop who off regularly. To date, we have saved over 15 000 coffee pods from ending up in landfill to be given another life.

This year we have joined the GLAD program for cling film and zip lock bags. While this is not a soft plastic program but it is something to reduce what soft plastics that ends up in landfill. It was amazing to see how much someone who uses beeswax wraps collected over Christmas. All my watermelon and wombok halves all covered in film.

I have just started collecting from Hairdressers in town this has being well received. Currently they don’t have a recycling bin just the big commercial bins so this is a positive step. I will be collecting from them monthly. We have sent to this program funded by Schwarzkopf, over 30kgs of containers. (Mostly from one hairdresser)

We also collected 6kgs of dental products that, along with the 10000 blister packs we managed to send off before the program closed in July this little project has saved over 150 kgs of waste.

I hope this year, to increase awareness to our community, to the available free recycling programs that are out there. So in some small way together we can make a difference.

GBSAN thanks Elaine for all her work on this program!
