Active working groups have been established to create and deliver projects that will protect the environment and deliver economic benefits for the region including, but not limited to:
Establishing working relationships with a range of local stakeholders including the SDRC, the Traprock Association, USQ and the Chamber of Commerce to support greater local influence in the planning and approval of renewable energy projects on the Southern Downs while ensuring economic benefits to our region are maximized and the potential negative environmental and social impacts are either eliminated of minimized.
In partnership with the Traprock Association and Regen Farmers Mutual support the development of pilot projects on the Traprock and elsewhere that facilitate landholder participation in the existing carbon and emerging biodiversity markets. Environmental markets offer landholders the possibility of new income streams from improved environmental management systems practices that support the long-term viability of these rural enterprises.
Developing an eco-tourism strategy in partnership with Granite Belt Wine Tourism, the SDRC, the State Government and other stakeholders, that will lead to increased biodiversity conservation while developing the Granite Belt as a premier nature-based tourism destination.
Working with the SDRC, the State Government and the resource recovery industry to develop a best practice resource recovery strategy for the Southern Downs which will reduce Council costs while stimulating investment in the recycling industry and the deployment of new technologies, such as Biodigesters, to deal with our waste in a sustainable manner.
To deliver these projects we need your support and involvement. As all of these exciting projects gain momentum we’ll need more members to get actively involved in planning and delivering. The combination of incorporation and the establishment of these working groups mean we’re now in a position to drive real positive change in partnership with other stakeholders but we really need more involvement from you our supporters.
Please join up today as a full member and get in contact with our working group conveners if you want to be part of making a real difference to the future of our wonderful region.
