Opportunity for Stanthorpe to join Plastic Free Places

Toby Hutcheon from the Boomerang Alliance

Toby Hutcheon from the Boomerang Alliance delivered an inspiring presentation at the GBSAN General Meeting on September 22nd. Toby is the Queensland manager for Boomerang Alliance, a not-for-profit group of 55 allied groups working towards waste minimisation. GBSAN is one of those groups. The Boomerang Alliance’s role is to assist the States away from single use items and in the direction of reusable containers. Largely through their efforts, every State in Australia now has a container refund scheme.

Toby’s talk focussed on the BA’s Plastic Free Places campaign and how GBSAN could get involved. The Boomerang Alliance could provide assistance in the form of guidance, engagement with Council, local businesses and our community. There is considerable scope for a Stanthorpe community led initiative to reduce single use cups and containers and replace them with reusables at major events and at local cafes. Together we could make a real difference to the amount of waste being generated in our town.

The Resource Recovery Team of GBSAN are meeting on Wednesday 2nd October to discuss how we can be involved in the Plastic Free Places campaign. If you want to be a part of this exciting initiative please contact John Lucas by email: resourcerecovery@gbsan.org.au
