Recycling on the Granite Belt

The first step should always be to reduce and avoid excess waste, then to reuse and repair items, and then recycle as the third option.

Stanthorpe Waste & Recycling

For residents who don’t have rubbish collection services, you can drop off your recycling to the Stanthorpe Waste Management Facility on Rifle Range Road, Stanthorpe.

A re-use shop is operated by the Endeavour Foundation on-site.

Mulch and crushed concrete are sometimes also available for sale.

Small batteries of all types, from button batteries right up to D sized and power tool batteries are now accepted at the Stanthorpe Transfer station. Smaller batteries are also accepted at ALDI and Mitre 10.

Cables are accepted as e-waste and are actually quite valuable due to the amount of copper contained. If you are like me, you have a drawer full of cables, so this is welcome news.

What goes in my recycling bin?

Plant pots

The preferred option for plant pots is to reuse by donation to friends, the Stanthorpe Dump shop or to the Whistlestop Stanthorpe Community Gardens (Thurs-Sun. mornings).

Second option is recycling. If they are marked as plastic no.5 they can just go in the commingled recycling, but try to reuse first.

Mattress recycling

SDRC has recently added a mattress recycling scheme ($15 per mattress) and a paintback scheme (free)

Large electrical

Refrigerators, freezers and air con units are accepted at the waste facilities in Warwick and Stanthorpe with a $12 fee to degas

TerraCycle

There are now several TerraCycle collection bins at the Whistlestop Community Garden at the Stanthorpe Railway Station. They are available for:

  • Dental products
