Terracycle at the Whistlestop Gardens
First published in Stanthorpe Today, March 2025.
The Whistlestop Heritage and Community Garden has taken the initiative to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill in the Southern Downs. In a partnership with Terracycle, the Whistlestop has collected over 10,000 blister packs, 15,000 coffee pods and other items which has saved over 150 Kg of waste going to landfill.
Terracycle works with its corporate partners such as Schwartzkopf, Colgate and GLAD to provide recycling opportunities for waste stream not recyclable through the wheelie bin programme including those listed below. The Whistlestop’s initiative illustrates the power of community action and they should be commended for the initiative. It’s now up us to support this programme.
Terracycle provides the following four recycling opportunities at the Whistlestop near the old railway station in Stanthorpe:
Dental Products –any brand of toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, inter-dental brushes and floss containers.
Hair care product containers (non- aerosol only) of any brand.
Cling wrap and zip-lock bags of any brand.
Coffee pods.
Granite Belt Sustainable Action Network is a community organisation with a broad interest in making our region more sustainable and forward looking with regard to a range of issues including agricultural practice, environmental protection and resource recovery. GBSAN supports the Terracycle initiative and is partnering with the Whistlestop to support expanding the recycling scheme to include plastic bottle tops, which can be recycled through Lids4Kids.
This community can make a difference to the environment in which we live, and where our kids are growing up, if we take the opportunity provided by the Whistlestop Heritage and Community Garden.
Please think seriously about:
Collecting the items listed above and taking them up to Davadi Street.
Joining us at GBSAN and working with others in your area of interest.
Doing what you can in your own household to make a difference.
The Whistlestop Heritage and Community Garden is situated in Davadi St. opposite IGA and open from 8.30 to 12 noon Thursday to Saturday. It’s definitely worth a visit with an amazing second hand bookshop and plant nursery too.
GBSAN has a website where you can find out more about it.
