Bottle Cap recycling at the Whistlestop Community Gardens

Plastic bottle caps are often on the list of the most common items found in wild places and every effort we can make to keep them out of our environment is worthwhile. Unfortunately, the advice for citizens in the Southern Downs has been to take the lids off bottles and put them in the landfill bin, but there are many people in our community who have been hoarding caps in the hope that a solution can be found. We think we might have found one!

Plastic bottle caps can now be recycled at the Whistlestop Community Gardens at the Good Shed, just over the railway tracks in the Railway Precinct on Davadi St. This is a joint initiative of Keeping Stanthorpe Sustainable, a project that Elaine Neilsen set up, the Whistlestop Community Gardens and GBSAN’s Waste and Resource Recovery Group. Two new bins have been added to the suite of collection bins already in place. We are collecting #2 and #4 lids as a trial. GBSAN’s Waste and Resource Recovery team have tracked down a couple of businesses in Brisbane that will accept these lids, and we will be collecting valuable data about the trial. Have a look at our guide.

Don’t forget that you can also drop off:

  • Dental products such as toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes

  • Hair Care products in plastic bottles

  • Coffee pods

  • Cling Wrap (clean and dry, please) and zip lock bags

Please support this grassroots initiative. Whistlestop Gardens are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings 8am-12pm.
