TerraCycle

There are now several TerraCycle collection bins at the Whistlestop Community Garden at the Stanthorpe Railway Station. They are available for:

  • Dental products

  • Hair products

  • Coffee pods

There will be a bin for dental products this program is sponsored by Colgate.

Another bin is available for Hair products sponsored by Schwarzkopf . Both these programs will accepts any brand and go off to TerraCycle.

Coffee pods is a different story. There will be 2 bins one for Lór, Illy Maconna pods- these go to TerraCycle and another bin for Nespresso and any other aluminum pods – these go to Nespresso

Lets get smart Stanthorpe and close the loop and keep these items out of landfill!

Hear from Elaine who set up the TerraCycle program

I started this as we were taking our Coffee pods to Brisbane to a Nespresso collect point. Which was at a volunteer run nursery. I asked them about it and what was in it for them. They said it brought more customers into the nursery. Thinking about this I thought the Granite Belt should have one and I needed a central spot. So I approached the Whistle Stop and they were very supportive, but I am responsible for collection and packing it up to send .

So then I went looking at TerraCycle and saw the other programs.

Nespresso is free and they accept all pods they provide the boxes and freight .

TerraCycle is also free ( funded by companies) but there are restrictions, some don’t accept other brands, they offer a rewards program which the funds have to donated to a charity. I have chosen Happy Chat.

Chatting with Phillipa from GBSAN about different programs and meeting with her waste group got me motivated and hopefully involved with GBSAN.

I can expand it or change programs – just see how it goes. I would also like to get the schools involved as a project about the environment.

I also plan to keep records of how much we save from landfill. That will be interesting and will send to Nicole at SDRC.

Thanks for the interest let’s hope our community get on board.

Thank you Elaine for your initiative!
