Cat control – free traps available

There is a wealth of information about the adverse impacts of cats on native wildlife and the need to adopt appropriate control measures to reduce these impacts as well as providing for a safer environment for domestic cats.

In its recent budget submission to the Southern Downs Regional Council, GBSAN has requested provision for a subsidised desexing program for cats; compulsory registration with a reduction for desexed animals; a public education program aimed at encouraging responsible cat ownership and an enhanced effort by the Council to control feral cat numbers.

People who are impacted by straying cats on their properties are able to hire a trap from the Council but this costs $13 a week plus a $88 refundable bond. To assist those who cannot afford this expense, GBSAN has recently purchased 2 cat traps which will be available free of charge to members. We have developed some guidelines and protocols about how to use the trap but insist that any users treat any trapped cats humanely. The best method for disposal is to take them to the Council pound for rehoming or euthanasia.
